The word ‘badinage’ means humorous or witty conversation – not unlike banter or repartee – and the band Badinage, an instrumental trio from Melbourne with members Dave Reid (guitar), Simon Capp (cello and bass) and Matt Omond (drums), create music that embodies the lightness, and entertainment, inherent in the term from which they take their name. On their EP Meander, released last year, there is certain playfulness on the opening track, ‘Surfin”, and throughout the EP there is a clear sense of them creating music to communicate with their audience – not so much call-and-response as call-out-and-listen.

Badinage are now preparing to release their debut album, Once Upon a Time, on 24 March, and from it comes the single ‘Imagination’, which is having its premiere here today, and which follows first single ‘Mustang’.

With cosmic country leanings, ‘Imagination’ has a swoon to it from the get-go, enhanced by the guest violin of Lucy G Rash. It makes you want to swirl slowly around a dance floor, or rock in a hammock, lulled into dreams – or flights of imagination – by the comforting rhythms of the track.
